
Following the Chicago, Los Angeles, Charleston, S.C., and few other police departments, D.C. police have acquired the ShotSpotter, the latest system of police department with a set-up of sound sensors that identifies and locates firing of guns.
ShotSpotter go together with 48 observation cameras installed in several city areas. The coffee cans size sensor can perceive the sound of gunfire inside two miles, finds out whether the shooter is on the move, as well as gauges the direction and speed of move.
Its able software is designed in such a way that it can easily distinguishes gunfire from the sound of crackers and car backfires, and it can pinpoint the location of the shots fired, even within feet.
Though the ShotSpotter cannot prevent shootings, the quick response may lead to the arrest of the guilty person and prevent crime.
