In a landmark trial at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, a U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor air dominance fighter flying 50,000 feet above ground successfully terminated a small target 24 nautical miles (27.5 miles) away. It is a remarkable achievement for the Air Force, ensuring aircrew’s safety at the highest level while flying at 1.5 times the speed of sound (1.5 Mach, 1142 miles per hour) and releasing a 1000-pound JDAM to destroy the target from such considerable altitude.
What else we can expect when Lockheed Martin, Boeing and the USAF lock hands together. The credit goes to Raptor’s ability to compute and display an accurate Launch Acceptability Region (LAR) so that the pilot can release weapon right on the target.
