The market of UAV (Unarmed Aerial Vehicles) is accelerating. The first UAV vehicles were used mainly for agricultural purposes. But now it is being used by the U.S. military forces as well. It is remote controlled and can be easily handled. The first of the UAV helicopters used in the military forces were used to collect data, but now the UAV helicopters (Fire Scout) are designed to deploy weapons and can be used in combat. The Fire Scout can also provide situational awareness and targeting support.

In August 2005, Fire Scout (MQ-8) was designed. It has multirole capability. It has the capability to autonomously land on and take-off from any aviation capable warship. It can find out tactical targets, carry out surveillance and can provide accurate targeting data to perform strikes. The MQ-8 runs on bio fuel which is a plus point. Currently, the U.S. navy is using the Poineer UAV. The Fire Scout has entered LRIP (low rate initial production).

Recently, the Fire Scout was modified and now, these are equipped with Metal Storm weapon, which fires the highest round-per-second. It has more provisions to be equipped with other equipments, from the peaceful observational equipments to the most deadly weapons. The Fire Scout can fly as far as 110 miles from its control station and can stay in the air for five hours. It can travel at 125 knots and can lift load up to 273 kg.

The Fire Scout can be controlled from any shipboard command and control system. This limits the range of the Fire Scout. But if they can be controlled from Sea Hawks (U.S, navy helicopters), they can cover a larger area. The Fire Scout is designed to operate a cog in network-centric weapons development program.

Now with the Fire Scout in use, the use of manned flights can be reduced. This drone chopper can remove the need of human soldiers in the line of fire.

Today it has been proven that fate of any warfare is decided by dominance in the sky. US army and British army are two of the strongest countries in air space. To take this further, US Army and British Forces teamed up together to complete a project named Joint Striker Force or JSF back in 2006. JSF is the biggest military operation in history. Apart from US and UK there are other seven countries involved in this project.

Features:

Under the JSF program, UK and USA will create fighter planes which are far more superior and technologically advanced than the existing aircrafts. Today, JSF is capable of producing aircrafts which are supersonic, stealthy and very lethal in nature. They are the best in class of technology and equipped with the most advanced weapon system. In a contract signed in 2006 between US and UK, Britain took the operational capability.

This means that huge amount of secret information was passed on UK and it was able to manufacture the plane and weapon system. But at the same time, UK was also dependent on US to get the advanced weapons from the later.

Initially, the UK Government had invested over $2.1 bn in this project. After the finalization of this deal, UK force was all set for purchasing 150 short take off and landing aircrafts from BAE Systems. If the deal was not finalized, then UK would not have been able to manufacture the expensive JSF carriers for their army. Also this contract was a great relief for both of the countries as cancellation of this contract would have ruined the relationship between the two.

One of the major issues that this program is facing currently is of funding. Huge amount of funds have been invested in it but still it needs more to carry on. Due to this reason, the program has been delayed several times.

With the success of JSF program, the future holds great results for both the countries and the 7 other participating nations. All of the participating countries will get the most advanced, technically superior airplanes in the world and consequently, the nations would be able to combat terrorism and other threats successfully.

Air France-KLM has confirmed that it is proceeding with order placement for a total of 50 new wide body long haul aircrafts, split equally between the Airbus A350 XWB and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. This deal, valued at $12 billion, was first announced in September 2011 and the contracts are now said to be ready for signature. In addition to firm orders for 25 planes each on the two aircraft manufacturers, Air France-KLM has the option to order a further 35 planes on Airbus and another 25 on Boeing. The first plane will be delivered in 2016 and the order will be completed by 2024.

2011 was a difficult year for Air France – KLM

Air France-KLM, the company formed in 2004 by the merger of two flagship European airlines, has gone through a difficult year in 2011. On revenues of 24 billion Euros, the company made a loss of 353 million Euros. Air France-KLM made major losses in their medium and short haul flights business segment which covers the flights to European cities from their two airport hubs, CDG in Paris and Schiphol in Amsterdam. Budget airlines took away a large piece of this business and high fuel and employee costs caused these losses. They made profits from their long haul flights and from their aircraft maintenance subsidiary that had 110 million Euro profit on a revenue of 1 billion Euros.

The large order for long haul planes signals Air France-KLM’s belief that this segment will remain as a profit leader for the company. Rolls Royce, the engine supplier to Airbus, was persuaded to allow Air France-KLM to service the engines in-house as part of this deal. This measure will help the maintenance business unit to provide engine maintenance services to other A350 operators. A decision on the engine for the Boeing 787 is yet to be made.

There is little to choose between the two planes

The Airbus A350 and the Boeing 787 are aircrafts of very similar specifications. The A350 can carry between 270 and 350 passengers depending on cabin configuration between different classes of seating. The Boeing is slightly smaller with 250 to 290 seats. Both planes have a range of 8500 nautical miles that would permit non-stop flights from Paris or Amsterdam to virtually any airport in the world. Both planes are designed for 15 percent better fuel efficiency than the current aircraft and for using biofuels. Boeing has orders for 800 such aircrafts from 56 customers and Airbus has orders for 567 planes from 35 customers.

The deal to perform servicing and maintenance of Rolls Royce engines inhouse could make Air France-KLM opt for RR engines for the Boeing 787, which could leave Boeing’s preferred engine supplier GE out in the cold.

It would be interesting to see whether other major airlines follow the Air France-KLM model of focus on long haul routes and inhouse maintenance.

United States of America is a major target for terrorism and terrorist activities. With advent of modern wireless technology and modern warfare, terrorists can now target a location from a virtual location. To fight with this global problem, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DAPRA) and US Air Force announced the Falcon project in 2003. Falcon HTV-2 Hypersonic Aircraft is a result of the Falcon Project.

Features

Falcon HTV-2 is a hypersonic unmanned aircraft that can travel from New York to Los Angeles within 12 minutes. The Hypersonic Technology Vehicle (HTV) has a speed of 16,700 miles per hour and it is just 12 feet long. With this enormous speed, HTV can reach any part of the world within one hour. As per the theory, a Minotaur IV rocket will launch from the base station and it will carry the HTV-2 in the outer space. There the payload or HTV-2 will be released in earth’s orbit and Falcon HTV-2 will use the Reaction Control System (RCS) to align its journey.

Then RCS and aero control guide will take the HTV-2 in the earth’s upper atmosphere. HTV-2’s internal technology and computerized system will pull its control speed and maneuver the aircraft at this level so that it can glide comfortably towards the final destination. Then it will roll and dive towards the target.

But in reality, Falcon HTV-2 was not able to deliver the result. It was launched on 11th August 2011, but after 9 minutes of flight, it crashed. Scientists were able to recover the record from the flight data and they are analyzing them. As per the official statement, overheating might be the cause for the crash. Once the result is known, scientists will engage themselves for the HTV-3.

Final word

Though, the primary purpose to create HTV aircrafts is to tackle the modern warfare, but its success has other business implications as well. The Hypersonic Aircraft may solve the problem of space travel and galactic travel in future. Also, medical help can be sent from one part of the world to another with the help of this hypersonic aircraft. There is a huge scope and endless possibilities and all depends on the success of HTV-3.

To fight with the air pollution, every vehicle manufacturer is designing and testing eco friendly vehicles. To realize this pollution-free future, Falx Air has unveiled an eco friendly Hybrid Electric Coaxial Helicopter UAV. The UAV will have an advanced charging battery system which will be used in air. Currently this battery system is in developing phase in United States. This UAV can carry a load of 70 kgs and also weapon or sensor systems can be attached to it for other usage. The design was first released in March 2009.

Features:

This Unmanned Aerial Vehicle or UAV has a main goal to save fuel and operate in a more eco-friendly way. That is why, the frame of the UAV manufactured from composite materials. These composite materials are certified from Aerospace. This airframe can be easily removed and replaced with package or load or weapons or sensor system. This UAV is capable of producing its own energy from the small rotary engine. This rotary engine is attached to a permanent magnetic generator. When the rotor starts to move in the air, it will create energy and that energy will get stored and used for generating necessary thrusts and ignition of the UAV. The entire engine system is weighed around 24 kgs.

There are three high torque motors installed in the main shaft. The flight control has auto pilot system and this technology allows the UAV to control the flight path during the journey. If for any reason, the rotor system fails, the batteries will start to avoid the crash. The batteries will then provide the necessary power to the UAV. These batteries are capable of flying the UAV for more than 3 hours with 70kg of load. This will provide endurance to the UAV.

Final word:

The new eco friendly UAV from Falx Air is very important as this will help to develop helicopters and aircrafts that will run on electricity. This may solve the issue of pollution created by ATFs in air.

Introduced in 1962, Chinook helicopters were designed to transport army personals, army vehicles and tanks in the field as soon as possible. It was successfully deployed during Vietnam War, and then it proved the usefulness during the Gulf war. In modern times to meet more complex, challenging warfare, Chinook Helicopters were redesigned and included with latest technological advancement. In 2006, CH-47F Chinook Helicopters were introduced to US Army. These helicopters are very useful to carry a large transport in a radius of 400 miles.

Features:

CH-47F is powered by two Honeywell engines which can give 4868 horsepower. With this extremely engineered Honeywell Engines, CH-47F can attain a speed of 175 mph while carrying a load of 21000 lbs. In the system, Robertson Aviation Extended Fuel System has been installed. With this advance fuel system it can reach to warzone of 400 miles radius very quickly.

To reduce operational cost and support cost, a single piece machined component was used to create the airframe. This single piece airframe also improves the longevity of the helicopter. BAE digital advanced flight control system had installed ion the system, instead of the old analog system. This gives better control and information to the pilot. Advance avionics system also had been introduced in this system to give more advance navigational information system to the pilot.

It has digital map and advance options to select the target locations as quickly as possible. CH-47F is equipped with advance surveillance system which includes missile warning system and countermeasure dispenser system.

Main function for CH-47F is to carry troops, artillery, weapons, food supply, Red Cross help, arsenals, water, and ammunition, barrier material to help the army in the warzone. It can also used in disaster recovery tasks, fire fighting, and rescue mission and to life heavy materials from construction site or for other similar purposes.

Final Word:

Chinook helicopters are one of the oldest helicopters in US Army, but still today, we cannot deny their importance and role in warzone or in a rescue mission. With advance technology and modernization, CH-47F can be proven as a worthwhile and efficient helicopter in coming days as well.

In science fictions, movies or in video games, we are all exposed to remote controlled, unmanned aircrafts. These aircrafts are remotely controlled and they can fly over through a war zone, firing missiles at targets and comeback to the base. MQ-9 Reaper or Predator B or Guardian is such an aircraft developed by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems. Currently, MQ-9 Reapers are used by US Air Force, US Navy and CIA. In US, US Custom and Border Protection also used few systems. Also UKs Royal Air Force and Italian Air Force used the same.

Features:

Predator B has a wingspan of 66 ft and it is 36 ft long. The height is 12.5 ft. Without any load, it can be weighed around 4900lb, maximum takeoff weight is 10500 lb. It can attain a operational height of 50000 ft and operate for 14 hours with full load. The maximum speed is 260 knots whereas cruise speed is 150-170 knots Tactical Gear.

Total seven hardpoints are attached with the system to carry weapons. MQ-9 can installed with 14 air to ground missiles. It can also carry the infamous 114 hellfire air to ground missiles. Besides this, it can also carry two GBU-12 Paveway II laser guided bombs. It can also be loaded with GBU-38 Joint Direct Attack Munitions. Recently, Predator B was tested for AIM-92 Singer Air to Air missile also Night Vision Weapon Sights.

A MQ-9 system is made of multiple unmanned aircrafts, ground control stations, satellite maneuver system. This aircraft is powered by 950 horsepower turboprop, so that it can gain the maximum height and move at 260 knots during a covert operation. The MQ-9 system also has 52 multi-spectral targeting sensor with image intensified TV/monitor that can be used both in daylight and at night. MQ-9 will play a huge role in future war and to gather intelligence on some specific target.

With the help of Predator B system, the war is fought inside a close cabin, from where the pilot, strategists and crew members are controls the plane. There is no bloodshed with the use of this technology. With its advance laser guided system, high speed, satellite control, it can be extremely useful in future wars.

One of the gold plated AK-47 was given by the fifth president of Iraq to his son Uday. It is said that some of the gold plated weaponry was also delivered to one of Saddam’s confederates. If rumors are to be trusted then both the guns are spin offs of the original, which can be easily de-constructed and then again assembled. Several of the gold plated arms of Saddam Hussein are still missing.
